About
Eugene Huo is a freelance photographer based in Toronto, ON, specializing in music and entertainment photography and portrait work. A highly respected and award winning recording engineer and producer, Eugene turns his creative vision towards the creation of images that captures the essence of the individual.
A love of photography that began with his father’s Yashica Electro 35 rangefinder was further fueled by various Kodak, Polaroid, Canon and Nikon cameras. Eugene currently uses the Nikon system in both film and digital.
“My earliest memory surrounding cameras was playing incessantly with my dad’s tripod. I would click the legs in and out, and fiddle with the head. I eventually broke it, but it provided no end of entertainment for me.
I really began to seriously take photographs in my teens, and then again in the last 5 years, picking up a film body and most recently a digital body. I tend to use mostly digital, because it gives more control over the final image back to the photographer.
What moves me is capturing what is at the heart of a person. To show a glimpse into that person and their reality, at a particular moment in time. To me, it’s somewhat ironic that I so enjoy portraiture, because as a child, I detested the ‘family picture’ time. Stiff poses, forced smiles, and no one was comfortable enough to really be themselves. I suppose that is what drives me now to capture that real moment, when people can be themselves in front of the camera.”
